Emergency Medical Services in Croatia and Slovenia

Does anyone have any experience with emergency medical services in Croatia and Slovenia regarding a heart attack or stroke? I have medical insurance, which will cover these events, but I am not familiar with the medical services available to foreigners in these countries.

Cindy, since you have such a specific need, and it is important that a factual answer is found, it may be worth contacting the two consulates or Embassy and asking them the specific question. It is possible that the story you heard has some basis in fact but I would be surprised if it is that simple. I'd expect other conditions prevail. Was this supposed refusal recent?

Not sure what you are asking? If you are looking for a listing of tourist friendly hospitals the Lonely Planet Guidebook, US Embassy, and your travel insurance company can provide you with that.

And i would purchase evacuation insurance. I carry a Medjet Assist card. I've availed myself to medical facilities in Italy, Romania and Hungary with out any great hassle. Look up and record the 911 equivalent number for each country before you leave. Also good idea to have the long number in the event the 911 equivalent does not work with your phone. Don't forget to have a phone that will work there. Most US phones will, but check with your carrier. I also wear a Medics Alert bracelet but i have no idea if anyone over here knows what it is. By the way, the health care service in Budapest is exceptional. Don't know if that answered any of your concerns. My ticker misses a took from time to time but i don't much worry about it when traveling. Also, bring your prescriptions in the event you need something or forget or loose something. Also comes in handy if cUstoms asks what all the drugs are for. You should carry them in the original container but that would fit in my suitcase so i just carry the receipts and so far no problems.

Thank you for your responses. To be a little more specific, my husband has atrial fibrillation, and he is concerned about the availability of emergency medical services while in Croatia and Slovenia. A friend told us a story about a woman who broke her arm while on a cruise in Croatia. As the story was told to me she was refused any medical treatment for her broken arm in Croatia, and she had to fly to another country to be treated. I assume I am missing a large part of this story, but I want to make sure that these 2 countries will provide my husband and I with any necessary emergency medical services.

Cindy, I have Afib as well. It is pretty well controlled by the meds. I did screw up on flecinide for a few days and ended up with some pretty uncomfortable moments a couple of days ago, but all is good now. I am sitting in Budapest by the way. I also get my coumadin checked while visiting here on a pretty regular basis. I am not going to try and play doctor so the perfect answer is have your doctor create some sort of minimum treatment standard and then go to US Embassy website in each country and on their websites and you will find a list of private clinics that service expats for each country. Send each an email with the information provided by your doctor and confirm that they will be able to meet your needs. In my case I can go for three days in full Afib without much concern which is plenty of time to get to a good private clinic or get home. But your husband may have different factors. Like i said, i won't play doctor. I've been dealing with this for almost ten years now and its just life.

I happen to know that Slovenia has advanced medical providers that function at a level similar to american paramedics. The availability is better in the bigger cities. Emergency Rooms will probably be a cash at time of service affair.
