Egypt - St. Catherine's Monastery

Will be staying in Cairo and Hurghada, Egypt. Are there guides or tours there taking travelers to St. Catherine's Monastery (Sinai). How far is the Monastery from Cairo or from Hurghada? Can you daytrip from either city?

Maybee from Hurgada. we did it a couple of yaears ago but from Eilat. the pick you up at your hotel around 6 am and you go visit the monastery at around
12 till 2 and then back to Eilat around 7 pm. you see Mount Sinai and the Monastery that is still inhabited by 12 monks and has the most faboulous collection of Icons outside Russia. It is defeinetly a must so check in the Hurgada websited and please, please go. happy travels Pilar

I was there last fall and not only would it be a very long day trip to the Monastery but the interesting part of the visit is to climb up Mount Sinai at 2am and see the sunrise...of course its pitch black and you battle the camels on the same path but thats the experience. We stayed at the hotel right there overnight which a tour from Cairo may also do. Cant imagine its too far from Hurghada though.

I was there in Oct. 2001 and we stayed in the hotel in the town next to the St. Catherine's. The hotel is tres fun and very odd and the monastery is full of wonderful objects and relics. The monks are very friendly. We climbed the Mt. at dusk and watched the sunset and then walked down by moonlight. It was warm and quiet and we were lucky enough to miss all the 2 am traffic. Friends of mine climbed up in 2007 as part of the early morning rush and were almost trampled by the hordes. I am not sure why the sunrise is supposed to be better than the sunset. I bet Moses enjoyed both equally.
