What is typical as to weather and temp in eastern europe from mid october thru the end of october. Cities in particular, Budapest, Vienna, Prague, Krakow, Warsaw, and Berlin. What about fall colors? Greg

Greg, if I had his guidebook I'd simply answer your question. I'm going in October myself.
Most of these cities are within the Continental climate zone. In typical years, the fall makes itself very apparent by the changing color of leaves in early-mid-October (although cold snaps can hasten the seasonal flurry of falling foliage). Since evenings get chilly already in September (except for Budapest, which lies in a unique Pannonian climate zone) expect frost or hoar frost when foggy. Temps range from 8 degrees C/48F downward in the evening toward freezing. Still there are sunny days, but the wind and more frequent rains certainly call for warm clothing. By end of October expect snowfall in Poland and the Bohemian and Austrian countryside, less apparent in the cities. Does that help?
Good fall color is found wherever deciduous trees predominate - Vienna Woods, Bakonyi Forest west of Buda, and the Czech plain, although often obscured by heavy fog.
We were in Prague in October 2007 and the weather was terrific! Around 45-50 F in the morning, but later in the day the sun was strong and it warmed to around 60-65. The sky was blue, the leaves were bold red/yellow. To me that is perfect weather.
Thanks for the feedback, I'll check Rick's book.
