What type of boots and other gear will I need for warmth traveling in E. Europe during winter and early spring?
Question- where in Eastern Europe and what sort of activities do you plan to do?
Prague, Krakow, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia.
At this point, our plans are to walk around towns and cities to see the sites. Thoughts?
Get Rick's DVD on Prague. IT was just on our PBS television station in Oregon. This will give you LOTS of ideas.
Boots probably aren't strictly needed in the cities. Some warm socks are probably all you'll absolutely need for your feet. Winter boots are a good idea if you plan to spend several hours at a time outside in freezing weather, but the flip side of boots is that if you spend a lot of time indoors, your feet will become uncomfortabley warm and sweaty. A decent, water resistant pair of walking shoes is probably sufficient. Likewise, don't go for the warmest possible parka unless you plan to spend extended periods outside. Don't forget a scarf and hat.
I froze last winter here in Bratislava. I spent Christmas in Budapest walking around the city. I wore hiking boots and my toes were still frozen.
Hat, gloves, scarf and umbrella are a must as are water proof shoes (or many extra socks.) If it is raining, the side walks can have big puddles.

Layer using good undergarments, long johns are your friend because they are light weight and dry quickly...Be sure to get silk or synthetic kind…not cotton. Skip the heavy jacket and bring a good water resistant top layer and a fleece mid layer. Buy a cashmere scarf when you get there and you are set!
