Dubrovnik or Rovinj?

I'm planning a 5-7 day trip to Croatia this summer and I'm trying to decide between going to Dubrovnik and visiting a few of the islands or heading to Rovinj. Both areas look interesting but since I'm pressed for time I thought it made sense to choose one. Please let me know if you recommend one area over the other. Thank you!

Hi Lisa, I am curious: is this 5-7 day foray into Croatia part of a longer trip to Europe, or will you be going from Boston to Croatia and back? The reason I ask is that logistics might help make the decision for you. That aside, it's difficult to offer an opinion without knowing more of your travel interests. Dubrovnik has, like you mentioned, access to islands to check out. It is also situated so that you could day trip (or overnight) to places like Montenegro and the southwestern parts of Bosnia. And Dubrovnik alone has enough sights to pass a couple of days - it's a beautiful city with a picturesque walled Old Town and there is a reason it's become quite the tourist hot-spot. Additionally, you could get around the area without renting a car. Rovinj itself, while very small, is also picturesque. While I would find it difficult to spend a week just in Rovinj, if you rented a car you could get quite a taste of the Istrian Peninsula, which includes many coastal towns as well as a large interior section for touring. You could also visit the Brijuni Islands. The architecture on the Istrian Peninsula is Venetian-like, as the area was ruled by the Venetians for a bit back in the day. With 5-7 days and a rental car you coud check out bits of Slovenia, too. Just keep in mind that Croatia is a very popular vacation spot during the summer and the roads on the Istrian Peninsula are mostly 2-lane. Unfortunately, I can't offer a vote for one over the other, because I loved them both. But maybe if we knew your overall travel plans and interests it would help in formulating an opinion.
