Dubrovnik & Montenegro

My husband & I will be taking the R.S. "Best of the Adriatic" next year which ends in Dubrovnik. We want to add an extra week in either this area(Dubrov. or Montenegro) or take the ferry to Bari, Italy to explore the "heel of the boot" Anyone with experience in these areas??

I can't speak to Montenegro but Dubrovnik is AMAZING! We stayed within the walls of the old city and there are no cars allowed... the streets are MARBLE - seriously! And they POLISH THEM EVERY NIGHT! Incredible. You can walk all the way around the wall of the city pretty much. It's an incredible place... we loved it.

Montenegro is one of the most beautiful places I've seen, and well worth a visit. I'd probably spend two or three days in Dubrovnik, then 3 days in Montenegro, and spend your final day/night in Cavtat (a beautiful small fishing village near the Dubrovnik airport).

I agree about how wonderful Dubrovnik is. I rented from internet info an apt. with windows that looked out on the square where the daily farmer's marketis . Be sure to stay within the city walls. I have not been to Montenegro so can't comment on that but we loved the islands of Korcula and Hvar. Korcula has such a medieval feel and Hvar is a little glitzier, esp. in summer, when amazing yachts are moored and "beatiful people" abound. I loved both and had hoped to hit the lavender fields on Hvar but we went in the fall so I missed them. I think my favorite of the two, however, was Korcula. However, others have mentioned more night life in Hvar and that is probably true.

These places, along with other parts of Croatia and parts of Slovenia, are on my "must see" list. In an early scene (maybe the opening scene?) of the movie "Quantum of Solace" (2nd James Bond movie starring Daniel Craig), there is an overhead shot of Bond driving through the hills of Montenegro. You'll know it's Montenegro because the name "Montenegro" appears in big letters at the bottom of the screen. It's a brief scene, but was enough to let me know I must go there some day.

Mike, it is so funny that you mention the Bond movie, because it was when watching Daniel Craig in Casino Royale that my husband and I decided to visit Montenegro. We went a few months later and loved it, but I think I recall reading after the trip that they didn't actually film in Montenegro at all for that movie! I could be wrong about that, but we were glad the movie inspired us!

We stayed in Dubrovnik for 5 days in June and it was awesome as others have noted. We did a day trip (with a rental car) to Mostar and wished we would have spent at least 1 night there. We also did a day tour to Montenegro. It wasn't nearly long enough but it was very nice. We used Atlas tours and visited Kotor ( I would have liked to stay there for a night) and Budva. We did not much care for Budva. I would also recommend a trip to Korcula.

Thanks to all for the great tips. Greg, our tour includes Mostar & Korcula so I am glad to hear that you recommend them both. From everybody's advice it sounds like we should certainly include a couple of days in Montenegro. After the R.S. tour is over we will have 10 days before we fly home from Bari, Italy, so we just have to decide how many days in Dubrovnik/Montenegro area & how many to explore a little of the Puglia region of Italy. Has anyone taken the ferry from Dubrov. to Bari?
Thx

Reading over the replies to your question, I was wondering when the best time to go on the Adriatic tour is? Spring; late fall? We are looking at that tour too. Thanks!
