Dubrovnik Help

My sister and I are planning to head to Croatia for 6 nights in mid-October. Due to finances and logistics, it's looking like we'll be staying put in Dubrovnik and doing day trips. Can anyone give me suggestions on where to stay and how to make the most of the short time we'll have there? We won't have a car. Thanks!

As for where to stay and making the most of your time, I'd follow the guidance in the book. Rent a car for a day and go to Kotor, Montenegro. Easy and very worthwhile. All details you'll need are in the book.

If you don't want to rent a car, you can also visit Kotor by tour bus. In October, they won't have English tours every day, so I'd arrange this soon after arriving. It's very worthwhile .... the bay of Kotor is breathtaking. When we visit Dubrovnik, we actually stay in Cavtat and make day trips to Dubrovnik (timing them for days when we can see few or no cruise ships in the harbor). Cavtat is a lovely little fishing village just south of Dubrovnik, near the Dubrovnik airport. Villa Andro is a great, inexpensive B&B in Cavtat. You might check the Trip Advisor reviews and see if this is the kind of vacation you're looking for.

Kara, we stayed in Old Town in Dubrovnik. We opted for an apartment as the cheapest route. We actually had a pretty incredible view as we were up towards the top of the stairs. We could see the wall, the sea, the rooftops. I have such great memories of waking up to that every morning... We didn't have a car. Walked everywhere. But there were options for day trips through little tour companies around the city. I found our apartment on tripadvisor's rental section of the site. We ended up with a two bedroom apartment, not that we needed two bedrooms, but it met all our needs. The owner even picked us up and brought us to the airport for a fee. You will LOVE Dubrovnik! 6 days will be plenty of time to enjoy the city and get in some day trips... If you want a cool place to swim, walk to the "Cafe Buza", there will be signs for "Cold Drinks" walking towards the front part of the city within the walls. Great views, cold beer, and you can go swimming off the rocks below!

I don't know what your budget is, but a friend and I recently spent two nights in Dubrovnik and stayed at Anita and Ivana's apartments, located in the Town Center. It's a great location (though you will have to trek up a few flights of stairs to get to the apartment from the street). Here's her email: [email protected] Have fun!
