Dubrovnik day trip

We'll have a day and a half in Dubrovnik, before renting a car a driving to Split. Should we take a day trip to the bay of Kotor or just enjoy Dubrovnik?

I've been to both (the Bay of Kotor was part of a full day excursion to Montenegro) but that was based on 2 and 1/2 days (with 1 day in Montenegro and 1 1/2 day in Dubrovnik). It felt really rushed - if I had to do it over again, I really would have liked more time in Dubrovnik. It's not very big, but I felt rushed in the museums and I would have liked to have seen more attractions. Montanegro is definitely worth going to, but your schedule seems a bit tight (if you had an extra day at least, I'd say go for it)

I guess it depends on what you enjoy doing. We are not so enthused with larger, crowded towns or museums. So when we were in this area, we stayed in Cavtat, which is a beautiful small fishing village south of Dubrovnik. We visited Dubrovnik once, for a half day, which was plenty for us. We took a day trip by bus to Montenegro and the Bay of Kotor, which we loved. So this is a decision only you can make.

It depends. Your enjoyment of either of these places will be highly dependent on the following factors... Your tastes The weather Time of year How busy/crowded each town is
How many cruse ships have disgorged their passengers in either We found Dubrovnik uncomfortably crowded during the day. Before/after the ships dumped their throngs it was wonderful, but a lot of the charm quickly wore thin with the crowds. I don't tolerate crowds well, though - maybe you do. We did a full day trip to Kotor (rented a car and drove) and loved it. Kotor was relatively empty when we were there (zero cruise ships that day, thankfully) but there were a few torrential downpours during the day - luckily, while we were in the car; while we climbed the Great wall of Kotor it was sunny and beautiful. I would have to say that the side trip to Kotor was one of the highlights of that part of our trip, and I'm very glad we went. On the other hand, Dubrovnik is certainly worth seeing. If you could manage a few hours there in the early morning and evening (when the crowds thin out) that might be ideal. You didn't say what time of year you were going - that could have a big influence.
