Dubrovnik, Croatia

We will be booking a week later in the year and we quite like the idea of Dubrovnik, but having never been to the country, I have no idea where to start. Can anyone suggest a really good hotel or appartment within walking distance of the old town for approx £100 ($150) a night, if near the old town is the place to be? Any other suggestions would be extremely welcome.
Thank you

No specific info on Apartments, but in general, near Old Town is probably best for most, then restaurants and the Old Town are near for walks and meals. If you were planning on Day trips, then you could stay anywhere along the main raod that runs from the North side of town where the Bus and Ferry port is, to the Old Town further south. There are good metro buses, so if you get a little further away, make sure you are near a bus stop.

In 2008, I stayed at Jadranka Benussi's rooms a few minutes walk from the Pile Gate. I loved the location in a quiet neigborhood close to the old town. Jadranka has 2 rooms and 2 apartments, all with a small kitchen. Not certain of her current rates, but my room was 400 kuna then. Her website is www.dubrovnik-benussi.com.

If I were planning a week in Dubrovnik, I would stay in the little town of Cavtat instead. It's a beautiful, picturesque little village just about 10 minutes from Old Town Dubrovnik by bus, or 40 minutes by boat (a fun trip). It's actually very close to the Dubrovnik airport. I would stay in Villa Andro, a great little B&B in a great location. It has been fully booked on both of our visits, but if we return, we vow to reserve far enough ahead in order to stay here. From Cavtat, you can watch the harbor at Dubrovnik and time your visit(s) for days when there are not 3 or 4 cruise ships in port. You can eat in small restaurants, and enjoy a glass of wine along the harbor while you watch the yachts dock! You can take day trips to Mostar or Montenegro right from Cavtat, as well as boat trips. I recommend that you read some hotel reviews of Cavtat and learn about this gorgeous little place.
