Dubrovnik-Athens

I'm planning to be in Dubrovnik late this coming August. My ultimate goal is to get to Athens, preferably not by returning to Bari and then on to Patras by ferry. Instead, I would prefer to use bus and train, via any or all of Sarajevo, Belgrade, and Sofia. I will not be on a strict timetable, so speed is not a major concern. More important to me is ease of travel and relative comfort (no 36-hour rides in a vegetable truck). Any hints?
