Driving tour of Crete

We plan on spending a week in Crete this fall and are looking for help with an intinerary that starts in Chania and ends in Iraklion. Our age prevents a great deal of walking and we're most interested in beautiful scenery and Greek atmosphere. Suggestions welcomed.

I drove around the island Iraklion to Iraklion , but it only took me a day.
I even stopped in a few villages.

The Samara Gorge is interesting. We stayed in a small town Chora Sfakia and I caught a boat over to the town at the base of gorge. I hiked up it as far as the very narrow bits. The town at the base had my all time most horrible awful public restroom. But there was a beach to swim when desperation hit. The bus ride to Chora Sfakia from Rhythmion was spectacular. We even had local man on the bus with a Cretan Bobble Hat on his head. This all happened years ago, but made a very strong impression! ; ) Pam

The Samara Gorge is a great experience. I did this trek 30 years ago, from north to south (which is the custom, I believe). Beautiful scenery, passing through a tight spot that is something like 3-5 feet wide in one place. At the southern terminus of the hike, we ended up on a beach where everyone slept. The next morning a boat came to pick us up and return us to Chania. Truly beautiful and memorable, highly recommended.

Funny, I was just telling a friend about the Samara Gorge tonight over dinner.
