Hello - I'm in Santorini for 2 days in late October, and will be renting a car. Is it easy to figure out where to go, reading the traffic signs, etc? I'm a little nervous that everything will be in Greek, and I'll get lost. I'm flying to the airport, and staying in Oia. So, I'll need to go back and forth from the airport, plus doing some sightseeing. Thanks.
Dan - do you need a car for a specific reason? I was in Santorini for 4 days and I used the public buses for transportation. It was perfect, I was able to get to the beaches, Oia, Fera, the black sand beach. The buses were very dependable. I thought that Santorini was pretty small and the buses were ideal for us (party of 4).
The island is small and it would be next to impossible to get lost. Signs are in Greek and phonetic English. THIS map will help you. Be sure to go to your local AAA office to pick up an International Driving Permit, no test or membership required. Bring 2 passport photos with you to save a few dollars.
Thanks for the map Lee! I thought I could travel the island more easily by renting a car, rather than doing public transportation.
Dan, As Lee mentioned, you MUST have an International Driver's Permit for renting cars in Greece. As I recall, I was asked to produce an IDP when I've rented on Santorini. As mentioned in a previous reply, you could use public transit, however having a car will give you more flexibility and will allow you to get to locations that aren't covered by transit. Happy travels!
Driving is easy. You won't get lost but you will want to stay longer.
