Driving in Eastern countries

Would it be advantageous to pack and use a "club" on the rental car steering wheel while driving in Hungary, Romania, Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy? We will be there the month of April. Thanks.

Hi, Rosemary. While bolt cutters won't go through The Club, they'll go through the steering wheel it's attached to like butter - taking most thieves about 2 seconds to get it off, unfortunately. It might have some deterrence factor, but not to anyone who's even slightly experienced in car theft.

I think your best bet would be to make sure you're insured and the rental company knows all the countries you're going to, and keep valuables out of the car or out of sight. Slovenia - multiple trips, never had any problems. Italy - cars broken into? Oh, yeah. Stolen... not so much. Hope you never have to worry about it!

While visiting friends in Prague, my friend suggested that I buy a steering wheel club. Since I would also be driving in Slovakia, Hungary and Austria, I bought one and sold it to the rental manager when I returned my Hertz car.

My friend told me that the red Opel I was driving would be a target and since I had to park on the street everywhere, the club would be a good deterrent.
