We are planning our trip to Croatia and will be renting a car in Budapest (headed ultimately to Trojir as base). We are debating on route to take from Budapest to Trojir, either heading up to Vienna (which eats up time)or should we head to Slovenia and take coastal road? Any suggestions? We can only allow 2 nights for either route. Thanks in advance for any suggestions...

I've been to Budapest and Trojir but traveled via train rather than car so I don't know the best route. If I were doing a similar trip I would check out various routes on www.viamichelin.com
If you map the route directly from Budapest to Trojir it's about a 7 hour drive. It's about a 2 hour and 20 minute drive between Budapest and Vienna (Wien.)then 7 hours between Vienna and Trojir. Probably depends on how much driving you want to do. If you have extra time a detour to Vienna sounds like a nice idea.
