We will be traveling this summer to Turkey. We are a family with 3 kids and wanted to drive from Istanbul to Izmir along the North Aegean Coast. Would you recommend this?
It's not at all hard to do, but if you wanted to save time, there are several low cost airlines that fly that route--Onur Air, Atlasjet, Pegasus are three to check. You may find that the cost of car rental (and gas--very pricey in Turkey) is the same or even higher than the airfare. It's close to an all day trip to drive and ferry, whereas the flight is about an hour, plus the usual airport prep time.

I advise you to flight to Izmir and than drive to Kusadasi, ephesus, srince, kusadasi, bodrum, Marmaris, Datca and virgin bays in datca penunsula...
