We are thinking of driving from Portoroz, Slovenia to Lubljana, via Soca Valley in November 2012. OR Cividale del Fruili (CdF), Italy to Lubljana Here are our questions: 1A) How many km/miles away is Portoroz to - * the Soca Valley?
* Lubljana? 1B) How many km/miles away is CDF to Lubljana? 2) What sights, eating places, accommodation are there to see, eat, and stay along way? 3) How are road conditions during this time? Are there a lot of winding roads or is it relatively a straightforward trip on the motorway? 4) Would we be encountering toll booths? If yes, what is the typical cost? 5) What alternate routes are available that you would recommend for us to go on to experience the sights and sounds of Northern Italy and Slovenia? 6) What are must see sights and eating places are there in Lubljana?
I would suggest 1) a good map and 2) the Rick Steves guidebook. Ljubljana is a very nice place, but not huge. Driving in that part of Europe is very easy, just like in the US. The only deal with the autobahn roads is that you must buy a voucher in each country, but we never got stopped and checked. You can also use mapquest to do a lot of planning.
Hi again, we have to stop meeting like this! For all distance\time queries, go to www.viamichelin.com and type in where you want to go. You said in the previouis post you would be doing the Karst, are you now doing the Soca\Karst and Ljubljana? From Portoroz to Ljubljana via the Soca Valley, there are many sights along the way. Driving past Nova Gorica, detour to Goriska Brda for some wine tasting in Slovenias Tuscany. Further up the Soca River is amazing around Most Na Soci and all the way up to Kobarid. There may be snow in the Alps already so you may even be able to ski at Bovec if you're lucky. The Vrsic Pass will most likely be closed so take the Predel Pass instead through Italy and back to Slovenia. Coming down you must of course stop at Lake Bled. Eat at the Pri Planincu or even at the castle above the lake. The roads from Portoroz to Sezana is freeway, from Sezana to Nova Gorica a little winding but nothing scary. From Nova Gorica to Kobarid fairly straight forward and not too winding. past Kobarid you enter Alpine roads and some can be very winding and can be icy due to snow. Road from Kranjska Gora to Bled to Ljubljana is fairly straight and then freeway. If you get your vignette from before, you wont have to worry about the tolls. Must see sights in Ljubljana are the Castle, Old Town, Neboticnik, Museums and Tivoli Park. Cheers
