Driving a rental car into Hungary

We will be renting a car in Germany, driving throughout Germany and Austria. We are planning a day trip from Vienna into Hungary. Most rental contract prohibit driving a rental into Hungary. What is the worse case?

1) its a rental car agreement, not a law
2) this is an anonymous internet message board!

Get a contract that'll permit driving into Hungary. Autoeurope.com should be able to take care of you. Why take chances? If you had an accident, your insurance would be null and void.

Many (if not all) euro car rental agencies severely limit the types of vehicles they will allow you to drive into Italy or Eastern Europe. Our insurance does not exclude Hungary from coverage.
Does anybondy with actual knowledge have an opinion?

Good point, Steve, thanks.

"Does anybody with actual knowledge have an opinion?"

Three years ago we rented a normal mid-sized car in Munich, drove all across Austria and into Hungary, all within the terms of our rental agreement.

I rented a car in Prague thru Auto Europe, We drove thru Slovakia to Budapest and Vienna then back to Prague. The only problem I had was buying gas in Slovakia where they did not take any of my credit cards-MC & AE. I had already pumped the gas. I had 20 euro so they took that at a steep exchange rate. In Hungary we did have to buy a sticker for the car at a service station when we crossed the border. This was all explained to us in Prague by the rental agent who knew which countries we would be traveling.

I usually booked my rental in advance with the caveat that I would be taking the car into the following countries. I then gave them a list. I have never been turned down or had the price jacked-up due to my Eastern European selections. I have not gone further east than Rumania. My rental agreement then comes with those countries listed as permitted. At the boarders you may be asked to show the rental agreement.
