We're starting to plan a trip to the western Balkans for next Fall. Planning on flying in to Ljubljana and leaving from Dubrovnik. Can't decide on driving down the coast or taking a more inland route, through Bosnia. From Plitivce, going toward Bihac, spending a night in Jajce, then to Sarajevo for a couple of nights, then visit Mostar on the way to Dubrovnik. Anybody done this route, any advice?
I've driven through the area, Dubrovnik > Mostar > Sarajevo > Nis. Never come down from the north. I liked that route, very scenic. Nothing precludes you from coming down the coast and then going inland and circling back. IIRC dubrovnik and sarajevo are not far by car, maybe 4 hrs, and mostar is right in the middle?
thanks for the reply. We may come down the coast. I figured we'd have enough time on the sea with Istria and around Dubrovinik, so why not go inland. But I don't have much info about the route, if it's even interesting.
You might want to search around posts here and thorn tree, I am pretty sure that entire seaside drive is going to be scenic based on what I saw coming up from Albania. I'm sure you already notice this, but when you say driving how is that going to work? I think there are issues with rental cars and borders in that region.
I found a good description of the route on a trip adviser forum. As for car rental issues, I assume I'm going to have to shop around with rental agencies to find what I need. But I've seen enough posts with people talking about driving from Dubrovnik to Sarajevo to know it can be done.
