When we arrive in Budapest what should we see we are there for 2 days before we get on a river boat and travel up to Amsterdam.

Thanks

I checked out the Frommers,Rick Steves and Lonely Planet books from the library and read them, then choose to buy Rick's"Eastern Europe" and "Prague" and "Budapest" city books, as well as a phrase book. IMHO, reading about it helps you define your own interests. If your traveling companions don't read the guides, you get to see everything YOU want to see!
Hope you have fun, we're spending 3 nights in Krakow, 3 in Budapest and 3 in Prague in a few days- tho the recent post makes us think we'll want to leave Prague early.

Thanks for your reponse, I will look into his book and see what areas there are in between the 2 cities and make some suggestions from there.

Indeed it always is better to take the time to do the research as you indicated YOU can choose to see what YOU want... true..

Well you have a great trip as well all the best an stay safe..

Krakow: Top sites as far as we were concerned are Auschwitz, Salt mine, castle...lot to accomplish in 2 days.

Drive: If convenient, stop in Eger, HU. See the wine caves.

Budapest: Too much to see in 2 days. Avoid House of Terror, Statue Park but see Parliament, St. Matyas, soak at the Szechenyi baths for a few hours, walk the Great Market Hall.

Suggestion: Fly from Krakow to Budapest and save the time. Devote the extra day to either Krakow or Budapest....both deserve more time.

Thank you for all your replies. I know it is not much time but we will be getting on a river cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam.

Thanks again, gone this Saturday July 4th. Have a great summer.

Given that you don't have a lot of time, I would also suggest that you consider flying between Krakow and Budapest. Use mappy.com or google maps to get ideas of the routes and drive times.

If you are going to drive, a good place to spend the night would be Levoca, Slovakia. It's a cute (but poor) town near Slovakia's biggest site, the castle of Spissky Hrad. It's a very large and impressive castle.

In Budapest, we very much appreciated the "House of Terror" - despite the overwrought name, it provided a good history of the communist era in Hungary. The Great Market was fun, and lots of locals were there buying food (get a langos at the langos stand on the second floor). The Castle Hill area was interesting as well.
