Dobruja, Romania

Has anyone been to the Dobruja region of Romania? I have some questions: Go from Constanza? Local guide help? Lodging and meals?

The main thing to see in that region is the Danube Delta (large unspoiled wetlands at the northern end of Dobruja, famous for their abundant wildlife; there are also beaches on its Black Sea end). To visit it get to Tulcea (1 1/2 hour by bus from Constanta), catch a ferry or rent a boat and head to the villages inside the Delta or to the small towns at its Black Sea side (Sulina, Sfantu Gheorghe). In all these places you'll find dozens of guesthouses; apart from lodging, they usually can provide meals and guided boat trips to the various sites in the Delta. The other things to see are the ruins of several ancient cities (plus one medieval fortress) scattered throughout the region. They can be visited as day trips from Constanta or from the resorts south of it. For guides try to get in touch with the local tourist information office:
http://www.turism-constanta.ro/EN/contact.php# Constanta and the resorts have all sorts of accommodations (hotels, guesthouses, short-term apartment rentals) and plenty of restaurants. The most popular area to stay in is Mamaia (the northernmost beachfront neighborhood of Constanta, filled with hotels, restaurants, clubs etc.) but it's also rather pricey.

AOK, Thank you for your information. It is very helpful to have the tourism www. address. Our plan is to go from Stara Zagora to Bucharest then to Constanta from where we plan a few day trips. One of these will be to visit the village of Tariverdi. Prior to coming to the US, grandparents lived there as part of a German farming community. We want to see what the countryside and small town look like.We know German families came and went from the area many years ago. After that we will travel north to the S.Ukraine to the Kolomya/Snyatyn area via Suceava. This is where more family came from before going to Canada. We want to explore that area too. Any suggestions about how to travel from Constanta to Suceava and into Ukraine?

Tariverde was indeed inhabited by Germans until around 1940. On the way to it also try to see the Gura Dobrogei/Cheile Dobrogei natural park (it starts about 15-20 minutes west of the Constanta-Tariverde road). You can travel from Constanta to Suceava by night train (departs 9.06PM, arrives around 7AM, sleeper tickets from about $33). The easiest way to travel onwards to Ukraine is to use the minibuses/shared taxis doing the Suceava-Chernivtsi route. They depart from the parking lot of the main market ("Piata Mare", on Petru Rares street) in Suceava multiple times per day, do the trip in 2-3 hours and cost under $20. From Chernivtsi there are hourly buses and several trains to Kolomyia via Snyatin. It's also possible to travel by train from Suceava to Chernivtsi (and on some days even directly to Snyatin and Kolomyia) but it's very slow and inconvenient as there's just one train per day.
