We will leave Athens early am and had planned to go to Delphi in late November. Staying near Patra. Then onto Nafplio for one night. After reading Rick's blog now I'm wondering if we should ditch Delphi and go for two nights to Nafplio. Any advice? We will then go back for three nights to Athens.
Pat, I vote for an extra night in Nafplio. There are a lot of local sites and the town itself is worth a day. During a 2 week trip to Greece we spent the first 2 nights and the last 2 nights in Athens and did Delphi as a bus tour from Athens. I usually dont like group tours but we werent picking up the rental car until the day we left for Nafplio. The tour took a total of 7 hours for travel, touring Delphi and lunch. The guide was fun and taught us Greek during the trip. We spent 4 nights in Nafplio and had a great time doing both.
In terms of travel time, I would suggest staying a second night in Nafplio, as I have made the trip between Delphi and Patra a couple of times and it is deceptively long. That said, Delphi is worth seeing if you don't mind the drive, and has stunning scenery. Mind you, Nafplio is a beautiful town and I could have spent more than the 3 nights I was there in July, and Epidauros, Mycenae, Tiryns, Corinth, etc. are near-by (hiking up to the top of the Acrocorinth was one of my most memorable experiences in nearly 6 weeks in Greece this summer).
Where near Patra are you staying? I was 3 weeks in Nikolaiika, near Aigio.
