Hi travellers. Myself and a friend will be spending 3 days in Prague mid September, and were wondering what you would recommend for a day trip( by train..). We had originally considered Cesky Krumlov but have decided that it's just too long a train ride to do in one day and still have time to see the sites. Can anyone suggest something closer to Prague...something along the lines of a smaller town, scenic, interesting sites, that sort of thing?
Glenn
We took a day and went to Theresientadt Concentration Camp. It was about an hour or so by bus. It was very interesting...
I hear Kutna Hora is a can't-miss daytrip (about 40 min by train, I think).
Glenn,
If you only have three days, you may just want to spend them in Prague. There is a lot to see and do there. If you really want to add something, Dresden is only two hours away I believe. We just returned from there and it was a beautiful city that you could see in a day trip if you don't hang out in museums all day! It was not overly crowded and there is a lot of history there.
Thanks for the advice/suggestions folks. I should clarify that we're actually going to be spending 39 days in Europe( London, then Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, and the Czech Republic) and have 4 nights and 3 full days for Prague. Based on all I've read, I would agree that it appears 3 days in Prague alone is worthwhile, but being a small town person who likes the "small town experience", I'd like to spend a day in a smaller place, and would also like to see a bit more of the country than just Prague...
PS...was in Europe for 15 days in 2006( awesome),but made the typical mistake of packing too much! This time one bag( Rick's Convertible and the Civita daypack), packed based on Rick's packing list( well, somewhat modified for my preferences) will be how I travel
I would also suggest Kutna Hora. It is a nice day trip from Prague and has a lot of history.
I have to say that Cesky Krumlov should NOT be missed. It is the Gem of the CZ in my opinion. I am living here for 2 years, and it is still the top spot. I would take the early morning train/bus to CK spend the night there. The castle is one of the best, the town is a fairy tale town, beats Rothenberg for midevial haunts, and it is not as tourist trap as Rothenberg. That is only 2 days, the 3rd day I would vote on Kunta Hora too.
I took the tour to Kutna Hora from the offer on the street by the astronomical clock, for what I remember being about 800czk. It included transport and lunch went to the the bone church, etc.
The trip to Terezin I took by bus for 3.50 USD round trip and spent the day.I thoroughly enjoyed both, but for the 3 of you the trip to Kutna Hora would be easiest. But if you have never been to a concentration camp and meuzeum before, I would recommend Terezin.
BTW I head out to Prague 2 weeks from tomorrow for a 3 week Eastern Europe vaca through Czech,Poland,Hungary, Slovenia and Austria.
Thanks again for the suggestions and comments everyone, it's greatly appreciated. I think perhaps Kutna Hora will be our main choice, but we'll keep our options open.
Cesky Krumlov should not be missed. It is awesome. Small town...you can walk all over the old part.
Kutna Hora is a great little side trip, but I've heard so many wonderful things about Cesky Krumlov that I'd suggest looking into that, as well.
Cesky Krumlov is a little far from Prague for a day trip but with an overnight stay go for it. Nice day trips would be also castles Karlstejn or Krivoklat or Konopiste. They are all in Rick Steves book Prague and the Czech Republic. After little homework you can go by train. Much cheaper than organized trip.
