Day Trip to Slovenia from Trieste

My wife and I will be staying in NE Italy (near Trieste) for four days and would like to travel into Slovenia for a day trip. Any suggestions? THANK YOU! Brandon and Melissa

The distances are not far, so you can consider two different day trips: 1. Towards Piran and the Peninsula 2. Combining the same day the Lipizzaner horse farm in Lipica with the caves at Postojna. Piran is quite developed, so if I had to choose one, it would be #2 hands down!

Are you willing to rent a car? A car would allow you to have the most flexibility and maximize your time in Slovenia. And what time of year will this be? Assuming you'd have a car, from Trieste, you could easily visit the Predjama Castle and/or the Postojna Caves. You could visit the Lipica Stud Farm, home to many Lipizzan horses. If you were up for a full day of driving, you could even swing up by Lake Bled or Lake Bohinj, drive the scenic Vrsic Pass, and head back toward Trieste via secondary roads (meaning non-major freeway). Or, do a day trip to Ljubljana (just make sure it's not a Sunday, otherwise pretty much everything will be closed). For more about Slovenia, you might find this website useful: http://www.slovenia.info/ In my opinion, anything west of Ljubljana would be do-able as a day trip from Trieste. Good luck! Edited to add: I started to respond to this post an hour ago but kept getting side-tracked. Now I see Diane has also posted a lot of the same info. Oops - sorry for the redundancy!

Thanks for the info, both of you! We'll have a car since I'm borrowing my sister's for the three or four days. Thanks again!
