We will be in Crete in July, and the published sailing schedules I've found have overnight trips from Crete to Athens. Logistically it would be so much better if we could depart early in the day and arrive in Athens in the afternoon or early evening. Should I plan on an overnighter, or is there a possibility for a daytimer? BTW...this is my first time using this RS forum. I have to say the participation of the community (as RS calls it) is mighty impressive.
i don't know how much the ferry cost, but if you shop airfare you may find some pretty cheap ones. maybe fly out first thing in the morning or late evening. you can look aegean airline, cypress, or olympic see if you find anything to compare cost. it should cut down the time significantly.
The summer ferry schedules should be published in April, and may have more daytime options from Crete to Athens. It will be a long trip, though, so if you can find an inexpensive flight, you might want to grab it.
Almost all the ferries between Athens and Crete are overnighters, but Anek Lines and Minoan Lines do provide the infrequent daytime departure. You won't know if one of them is available to you until much later in the year when the July schedules have been published. When they are you will find them HERE or on the individual ferry company websites. Ferries and planes go to both Chania and Heraklion.
Thanks all. My blindspot has certainly been exposed. Flying is much faster and at very reasonable rates. Those extra precious hours in Chania will be put to good use.
