Czech Transportation Help!

Trying to figure out the best way to get from Prague to Cesky Krumlov and then onto Salzburg on another day. In addition to being totally confused by the jizdnirady website, I'm not sure whether to go with a bus or train. Bus seems to be faster and cheaper, but I can't figure out if there will be room for my luggage (either medium sized rollerboard or frame backpack) and I've heard horror stories about stuff being stolen from the luggage compartments under the bus since you aren't there to monitor it at every stop.

Where did you hear these horror stories? We have used busses there and in Romania, and haven't worried or had anything stolen. It might be disconserting to loose sight of your luggage for a while, but you can't go through life paranoid.

Ok but do all the public buses have the luggage compartment or are there some cases where I'll need to have it up in the seating area with me?

We use convertible carry-ons which are too big for the overhead storage on the busses all though they will fit into train overheads. What I tried to do is sit above the luggage compartment door and and kept an eye on what was going on outside. As all the passengers on our busses were going to the same place nothing untoward ever happened. I never did see any monkey business going on. While waiting in a bus in Constanta we looked out the window towards the parked, unused busses and saw one of the luggage compartments open from the inside. A man rolled out, sat on the edge, had a smoke, rolled in and closed the door. Now, that's a little weird.

Prague to CK- take the student agency bus. Don't put your valuables under the bus, but we took it in the other direction and did nt have any trouble. The bus only makes a couple of stops. There is also a shuttle from CK to Salzburg. Actually several competing shuttles.

Of course, you can always step off the bus at each stop and check that your bags are not taken.

You can also go by train. It's little more expensive and it takes slightly longer than yellow bus (Student agency). You would have to change trains in Ceske Budejovice. You would not have to worry about your luggage, it will be always with you.
You can buy tickets once you are in Prague. You don't have to use Czech website for timetable. Deutsche Bahn website is easier to use and it covers all Europe.

Jenessa: My wife and I travelled in the Czech Republic and Hungary for 3 weeks in December of 2012. It was our first trip by train and bus, and it was extremely easy, especially young at heart folks in their mid 60's. The train from Prague to Cesky Krumlov was less than $20. It was very easy to get bus and train information, times, costs etc at the stations, there was not a language barrier. I've not had issues with the bags in the storage compartments on buses, and always noticed that the bus driver loaded/unloaded the bags. I did, however, go outside/ot of the bus at the stops to keep an eye on my bag. Enjoy CK, it is a truly amazing place! John
