We are going to stay in Karlovy Vary (spa town) in the czech republic on the 29th of Oct. Part of a 2 week trip through the country. (25th aniversery) Our dilema is that we count on Rick Steves for hotel recomondations but his Czech republic guide book does not cover this city. We are looking for a small, unique and relatively inexpensive hotel or guest house....any sugestions out there??? ed
My wife and I stayed in homes when we traveled CR, Slovakia and Hungary. Ladies place signs in front yards advertising rooms for rent. Most provide breakfast.
We always enjoy seeing the homes and meeting people of another culture. You will get special attention and a warm welcome.
It helps to have a car. But you can always go to the local Tourist Information Office and ask for a place to stay.
There is a reason why Rick doesn't cover Karlovy Vary as its overpriced for everything and not that much to really see there unless you happen to be there during the film festival. Mostly Russians and Germans go there to be pampered in luxury. The real Czech experience for way less money is in Trebon. New spas are opening up all over CZ that offer better experiences than KV. Pocatky has a new one that offers dog sledding in the winter and horseback riding in the summer. The real gems are in the castles and chateauxs in the KV region (like Loket), but they are closed or limited schedule late Oct - mid April. If this is really where you want to go try www.myczechrepublic.com/karlovy-vary and www.karlovy-vary.cz/en .
I cannot advise about Karlovy Vary as I have not been there. I have been to Trebon in the summer and did visit the spa. I enjoyed the old town and also bicycling around the ponds. I had a 2 week stay with procedures at Priessnitz Spa in Jesenik and found the price quite reasonable and I also experienced profound health benefits. The spa differs from Trebon due to the Old World charm of Priessnitz versus the more modern Trebon. The environment is in a beautiful mountain setting with gorgeous views. In winter skiing is available and mountain biking and hiking are available during the warmer months. This is an untapped treasure!
