My family (wife and 4 year old son) is going on a cruise to Ephesus and Chania (Crete). How hard is it to get around to all of the stops in Ephesus on our own with only 10 hours in port? Also, what is there to do is Chania? We only have 7.5 hours in Chania. We recently purchased and read the Mediterranean Cruise Ports book by Rick Steves, but Chania is not mentioned. Any advice?
The port is in Souda, just take a cab to downtown Chania. The old harbor is a nice area with lots of restaurants and shops.
Ephesus is harder to do since the port is about thirty miles from Ephesus. There is public transportation there and many guides at the entrances for hire. It is worth hiring a guide.
I have been looking into cruise ports too lately, and have found that when you google " x cruise port" you usually some up with a discussion board on exactly the information you are asking about. (here is one I found for Chania http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1335805).
