Is it possible to walk and how far into the old town area of Split and Dubrovnik from cruise ship ports? Any other tips on individual sightseeing and eating?

Haven't been to Split. You cannot walk to Dubrovnik easily. The cab ride two years ago was 10E. However, we and another coupled hired a driver for about a three, four hour tour of the surrounding country side and ended in Dubrovnik for 50E which actually was 40E since it would have cost us 10E to get to Dubrovnik It was very informative and much related to the civil war problem.

Dubrovnik is far from the new port. You can get a taxi, or your ship will have a shuttle (probably for a fee). Or, some ships tender in. In Split we walked into town from the port in about fifteen minutes. I think some ships tendered I there, too. Tendering has a big down side as you have to wait for all the excursion people to get off the ship. You cruise line should be able to tell you in advance which ports will require a tender, though these things do change sometimes at the last minute.
