I am looking to travel to croatia with a 1 and 6 year old in august. With young kids we will not be as able to jump around too much but will need to be based out of one spot. Recommendation for the best place to be based out of for 10 days in august?- access to beach, day trips, etc?

Unfortunately, Croatia is a bit spread out for just one base. You might consider splitting your 10 days between 2 bases. Istria has some nice beach towns (I prefer Rovinj), but day trips would be limited to towns in Istria. Split would allow you to day trip to Hvar by catamaran, Plitvice by car or nearby Trogir by bus. Dubrovnik is nice, but day trip options are limited with young children. Just to give you an idea of driving times, Split to Rovinj is about 6 hours (mostly expressway) and Split to Dubrovnik is about 4 hours (mostly 2 lane road).
