Croatia - travel tips

We will be travelling to the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia in October for 7 days. We plan on spending a few days in Dubrovnik and going to some of the islands before we head back by ferry to Italy from Split. Any suggestions on which islands to go to as well as accommodation tips would be greatly appreciated.

An easy day trip to the Elaphite Islands is recommended. All of these islands are quaint and small if that's what you're looking for. Another option is a day trip to Mijet. This island is a national park boasting an island within the island. Plus you could take a day trip to Mostar which Rick Steves really recommends.

It's very easy to get to Hvar by catamaran from Split. I'd suggest going from Dubrovnik to Split by bus, taking the afternoon catmaran to Hvar for 2 nights and then spending your last couple of nights in Split. There's also a late morning catamaran from Split to Hvar, but you'd have to take a very early bus from Dubrovnik to catch it. As for places to stay, I can recommend the following: Dubrovnik - Jadranka and Milan Benussi sobe, Hvar - Ivana and Pasko Ukic sobe and Split - Sobe "Base" (but avoid on Friday and Saturday nights - noisy teenagers gather nearby until after midnight). In Split, plan one meal at Buffet Fife (fun and inexpensive - self seating on patio).

Hi Marie, I would also recommend a trip to Korcula if you can fit it into your agenda. The island is beautiful, the old town is a great example of medieval architecture, there are some great places to sample the local wines, small quaint fishing villages, easy walking or cycling trails to stunning secluded bays, entertainment in the evening including live bands and the famous Moreska sword dance. There are also lots of surrounding islets that you can take a short excursion to from Korcula. Great choice for October as well, the sea is still warm enough to swim and the sun-worshipping crowds have dispersed! From Dubrovnik you can catch a bus from the main station at 3pm, takes about 3 hours to Korcula, the route is very scenic. Unfortunately the ferry and fast catamaran only runs in the peak summer months. Spend a couple of nights in Korcula and then head to Split on the fast catamaran at 6am (1pm on Sundays). I also agree with Ryan with taking a trip to Mljet, the island is stunning, very quiet, peaceful and a fantastic place for a day trip. You can easily get there from Dubrovnik or Korcula on a tour with a local travel agency. Accommodation in Korcula in October will not be hard to find and you will make great savings on cost outside of the main summer months. I would highly recommend wherever you stay in Croatia to a private room or apartment as opposed to a hotel. If you are venturing to Korcula I can help find you accommodation. Enjoy your planning, I have no doubt you will love Croatia!
