Hi Everyone- I've been lurking around for a while and hope you all won't mind making suggestions to an itinerary for a trip to Croatia and Slovenia for this May. We are flying into Budapest. I used to work in Hungary, so this allows me to visit my old village and friends, which I wanted to do. As such, we don't need to take the time to really see Budapest. I would, however, like to be back in Hungary at least a day or three earlyboth for "pad time" in the schedule and for time to maybe take my husband to a couple of my favorite cities and or see more friends. I can feel criticisms coming my way already for the "quick trips" to Mostar and Venice. They're both places that we'd like to see, but care to stay too long in, so I thought it might work. Though writing this, I can begin to see benefit to eliminating it. I'd still really like to see the town. It doesn't help that my husband and I are fidget-y types who don't particularly like "down time"even to sit on a beach. . of course we can fit everything in. (On the plus side, I have cut the trip down from a series of one and two day stays in Beograd, Sarajevo, Montenegro, and Dubrovnik in addition to the current line-up) Wow. .. this all turned into a much longer way of saying "What do you think? Encourage you to include Dubrovnik. It was a highlight of our Croatia/Slovenia vacation and we added an extra day to our itinerary once we were there (very out of character for us).
I to would make time for Dubrovnik which is a great place to visit and walking the walls was my favorite thing to do in Dubrovnik. To me Split is a day trip only.
I've actually already been to Dubrovnik, which is why we decided to give it a miss this time. I did enjoy my time there, but with a car, we didn't want to deal with the hassle and time it takes to get there. I haven't been to Split or the near-by islands though. I'm not trying to be combative and definitely appreciate the input.
I think you've got plenty of time in Mostar. In my opinion, on your itinerary, it is only worth a day, but it is convenient to spend a night there. The area around the bridge is beautiful at night, and the day trip tourists will have gone home. I would encourage you to spend some time in the Plitvice parkit is really lovely and a nice change from urban Budapest. You might shorten your stay in Split, which has less to see and do. (Again, just my opinion...)
I'd recommend one day less in Split too. Looks like a well-balanced trip. As long as you have a car, make sure to spend an hour or two at Lake Bohinj, do the RS driving tours for The Julian Alps and Logaska Dolina, and the Skocjan Caves. If it could fit into your itinerary, Hvar is a great island to visit in Croatia.
