Croatia - Overnight & a day near Zadar?

Hi. My college-age son and I are doing an Eastern trip starting in Krakow and ending up with a long weekend in Croatia. My wife and other son (who will be in school) will join us that long weekend in Croatia (we live in Germany). Rates/times work best going into Zadar, and return from Zagreb, and our only concrete plan is to see Plitvice lakes Sunday. I'll have a car by the time I pick them up Friday evening in Zadar - any suggestions where to stay and what to visit in the Zadar area before we head to Plitvice lakes for a Sunday visit? I want to save Split and futher north for another trip - just looking for either a quaint coastal town near Zadar, or Zadar itself if worthwhile (not sure since it's not in Steves book). Suggestions are welcome.

A visit to delightful Pag Island would make a nice day trip from Zadar. The old town of Pag is very interesting. Pag is known for its cheese (from the local sheep) and its lace (made by the old ladies in Pag). In the summer, the island can resemble a minature amusement park, but for your dates if travel, I imagine it will be more subdued. The tourist office in Pag was able to secure private accomodations for me. Pag is about a 50-60 minute bus ride from Zadar.

Zadar merits at least a couple of hours. The old town has some interesting fortifications, as well as some cool churches. Have fun!
