Croatia Itinery

Ok Ive refined my itinery and would like peoples' opinions, particularly in relation to whether 3 nights in Korcula is too much:

Day 1 - England to Paris, onto Munich and overnight train to Zagreb.

Day 2 - Day in Zagreb and overnight train to Split.

Day 3 - Arrive in Split and Ferry to HVAR.

Day 4 - Hvar.

Day 5 - Hvar.

Day 6 - Ferry to Korcula.

Day 7 - Korcula.

Day 8 - Korcula.

Day 9 - Ferry to Dubrovnik.

Day 10 - Dubrovnik.

Day 11 - Dubrovnik.

Day 12 - Bus to Split, Split to Plitvice.

Day 13 - Day in Plitvice, Bus to Zagreb.

Day 14 - Zagreb to Munich, Munich to Paris overnight.

Day 15 - Paris to England.

What do you think? Wondering whether we should only have two nights in korcula as the accomodation all looks a little depressing... Or is the island worth it...?

Thanks.

I'm sorry I can't offer suggestions about the islands, as we did not visit any on our trip. However, one thing I noticed is that you are spending Days 1, 2, and 3 just getting to Split so you can get to Hvar, and Days 14 and 15 getting from Zagreb back to England.

It just seems like an awful lot of time in transit that takes away from being able to spend more time in say, Split. So I was wondering if you had explored other transportation options (like flying from England directly into Split and out of Zagreb)?

Korcula is a great place. I'd recommend Apartment Lenni from Rick's book. We stayed this past summer and it was wonderful. We were told that Rick shot a clip of the apartments for an upcoming show. Lenni and Pero are gracious hosts.

Hi, Dom. Just to make sure I'm understanding right, Day 14,15 are spent mostly traveling from Zagreb to England?

Why not just catch a flight. Several of the discount airlines fly around there, or out of Ljubljana/Trieste. Might be a good deal for you...

I do not like flying Im afraid, holidays would be much simpler if I did!

however, its not all bad in that we are getting overnight trains, so we save money on hotels.

Only change Ive made is that we are going to travel from Dubrovnik on day 12, then train to Split and then overnight to Munich, so that we can spend 2 days and a night in Munich. It once again saves one night of hotel costs because its another overnight train journey. It just means it will be a long day of travelling, but we have to that leg of thre journey at some point. Means we lose out Plitvice, but I just think it would be better to spend last day closer to home so as not to miss train home and Munich seems interesting place.

Don't cut Plitvice!!!! You could trim a day in Korcula and possibly skip the day in Zagreb and go directly to Plitvice thereby breaking up the bus trips. Plitvice will make a nice balance to your trip, its a 'don't miss' place. In Korcula we stayed here- http://www.ikorcula.net/private/044/ - Croatia is wonderful, you will have a great time I'm sure.

Hi, I agree, don't miss Plitvice, the lakes are beautiful, even on a rainy day. We spent four nights on Hvar, just relaxation time in the middle of our trip. I would spend no more than two nights on Korcula, unless you want/need relaxation time (not a bad thing). Croatia is a beautiful country and has a lot to offer. You can take a look at our pictures and some details of our trip at www.gadtravel.com.

I think Zagreb is not that interesting. It is a place you could cut. Just travel through there. Korecula is beautiful. From my memory there isn't that many sandy beaches on the island. I could be wrong. But its a great place to relax, swim. We rented a boat that turned out really fun.

we are just passing through Zagreb, but will be spending one night there and then getting early train out next day.

Unfortunately cannot fir Plitvice in, so its 3 nights in HVAR, three nights in Korcula, three nights in Dubrovnik, night in Zagreb and two nights in Munich (on way there and back).

I just returned from a trip to Croatia in mid-July. I stayed overnight in Zagreb, much like you are doing before renting a car the next day to drive to Plitvice (which was fantastic). Zagreb seemed like a cool town at night--lots of outdoor cafes. We ate at a great pizza place called Pizza Cafe Lire, which seemed to be the only place serving food after 23:00(we arrived into town late). In terms of the islands, they are very beautiful, but it depends how much you like relaxing on rocky beaches for any length of time. The sightseeing on the islands can be easily wrapped up in a day. During the day, it is very hot, so you will mostly want to be at the beach (there are a few sand beaches but mostly rocky beaches) and enjoying some beers in the outdoor cafes. We stayed 3 nights on the island of Vis, which was very relaxing and quiet and got nice breezes, 2 nights and 3 days in Hvar (which I thought was plenty and was ready to move on, but had to wait for an afternoon ferry), and one night/two days in Korcula, which being on the tail end of the other islands, I also thought was enough. My favorite island was Vis, however there is more nightlife on Hvar. We stayed one night and two days in Dubrovnik, which was plenty of time to see the sights. I had very central, nice accommodations at a nice price in all three places if you need a recommendation. Feel free to email me at courjen@twmi.rr.com
