Croatia in April

We have a three week trip scheduled into Zagreb and out of Dubrovnik in April. We're not sure what the weather will be like in April, and are looking for some advice. We were thinking of driving over to Italy (Padua and Ravenna) where there is more to see indoors, and then taking the Ancona-Split ferry and then down to Dubrovnik. We would appreciate suggestions! Is it worth scrapping Italy and just sticking to the Croatian coast and perhaps a trip up to Ljubljana? We are interested in Roman and medieval history, but really enjoy the people (and the food) the most. Also, has anyone taken the Blue Line overnight ferry from Ancona to Split? We'd love to know how it was and if you have any suggestions. Thanks!!
