Croatia Honeymoon Itinerary

My Fiance and I are getting married in early July 2013 and we are thinking that Croatia would be the perfect place to spend our Honeymoon. Let me know your thoughts on this tentative itinerary? (Feel free to poke holes and offer suggestions) With so many sites to see I can't help but fill the itinerary. Is this doable? Are we trying to fit in too much? Monday, July 8th - Travel Day (Arrival Dubrovnik) Tuesday, July 9th - Dubrovnik Wednesday, July 10th - Dubrovnik - (Excursion to Mostar) Thursday, July 11th - Dubrovnik - (Excursion to Kotor) Friday, July 12th - Kortula Saturday, 13th - Split Sunday, 14th - Rent Car and spend day at Plitvice National Park Monday, July 15th - Drive to Plitvice to Rovinj Tuesday, July 16th - Rovinj (Day trip to Motovun) Wednesday, July 17th - Rovinj (Day trip to Pula) Thursday, July 18th - Drive to Zagreb (Return rental car)

I'd say that some parts of this are unrealistic and not really possible (and I tend to travel at what many here would consider a frenzied pace). The pace of your trip looks kind of exhausting (even to me). We did Slo-Cro in May and covered most of your itinerary (did not do Mostar or Zagreb). Some thoughts... Note that we went in mid-May, which was a great time to go - before the crush of high-season tourists overwhelmed everyplace. Dubrovnik and Split were still crowded, I can only imagine what they're like in July (shoulder-to-shoulder?). Other places we went were delightfully empty, but locals told us in June/July/August they were swamped. Plan accordingly. 1. I think your trip is too short to include all that you have here comfortable. Look for something to cut. 2. You might consider one day-trip from Dubrovnik, not two. We did Kotor and LOVED it. We did not do Mostar (we've been to larger cities in the islamic world so the appeal of Mostar wasn't as strong for us). 3. It's 'Korcula' not 'Kortula' (actually Kor?ula, IIRC). We loved it. But it will take a while to get there (depends how you go), and you may end up just arriving late in the day and moving on the next morning. 4. It's a long drive from Split to Plitvitce. I don't think it's realistic to drive there and see the park unless you depart at oh-dark-thirty and drive like crazy. 5. Day trip to Pula is easy and worth it. Not sure if Motovun is doable as a reasonable day trip. Can't help you with Zagreb.
Hope that helps.

I have to agree with my near neighbor (20-some miles away) this is a busy schedule with much travel time. Our Sep/Oct trip included Dubrovnik, Plitvice, and Zagreb, so I'll comment only on those. We stopped 1 night in Mostar on our way to Sarajevo from DBV. Agreed, a day trip is good enough for that town, an overnight is not needed. We enjoyed the day trip by bus to Bay of Kotor. It is a nice day, but kinda long (8a - 6p); and I felt a little cheated by comparing it to the too-high expectation of finding a magnificent place - it was very nice, just not fabulous. With these day trips, you may have no time for Dubrovnik itself. Riding up the mountain, walking the wall, shopping in the daily market - these are worth it. Plitvice is quite nice, too. You can do the visit in 2-3 hours if you keep the pace up. We enjoyed our 1 overnight there, although arriving late in the day and leaving after walking the park.
We had 1 night in Zagreb, which was enough for us. Off the train just before noon, we walked to about everything we wanted to see that day and evening. It's surprisingly compact, again with a nice market place by the main square. We stayed at Hotel Central (www.Hotel-Central.hr/eindex.htm) near the train station, just over 1/2 mile to the bus station to catch a ride to the airport. Sweets at Vincek (several shops around) is a nice treat.

Too much driving. For instance, Split - PL is 5 hours. We did that summer 2011. Roads are good, but it's 5 hours min. You either cut Split short or get to PL at 11 AM. PL is a single day, true. But early morning is best to get there. Plus where are you staying? It's really best to stay 3-4 days in one place, which you do in Dubrovnik and Rovinj. It makes more sense to do Rovinj before PL. You could drive from Split to Rovinj, stay a couple days, drive to PL, and finish in Zagreb. Zagreb is 3-4 hours from PL. Your route doubles back (N to PL, south to Rovinj, N to Zagreb) which is kind of silly. What I would cut is 2 day trips. You go to Rovinj, but don't actually do anything there. Also cut the day trip to Kotor.

You're definitely not allowing for adequate travel time, especially in the middle of the trip. One alternative would be to go from Dubrovnik to Split for 2 nights and day-trip to Hvar the second day. A day-trip to an island isn't as enjoyable as a stay, but the catamaran connections work better logistically. Tours to Mostar and Kotor don't always run daily. Atlas Travel offers good all-day tours to both. You might want to check Atlas' website to get an idea how those tours fit with your itinerary. Two all-day trips also limit your time to enjoy Dubrovnik itself.

We just returned from our honeymoon in Croatia. While your itinerary looks very nice, I will say that you are missing a lot of what is great about Croatia: stuff far away from the tourist cities. Here are my thoughts:
1. You don't need a full day at Plitvice. It is beautiful and worth seeing, but a full day is too much. I would spend the mid-day there and then drive to Rovinj or nearby. 2. How are you planning on getting to Split and Korcula without a car? They are quite far from Dubrovnik. 3. I hope you like scorpionfish, because it is available everywhere and is quite tasty! We had it in Rovinj, Trogir, and Dubrovnik and at every place it was great. 4. If you somehow get a chance, stay on Pag at Boskinac. It is a beautiful old house with eleven rooms and a glorious restaurant in the house. You won't be disappointed. It was the highlight of the trip. 5. When in Rovinj, be sure to eat at El Niro. It doesn't look like much, but the owner was great and the food was perfect. 6. Drink the wine. Everything was good, but especially the whites from Istria.

When I planned a Croatia trip, I decided to focus on just a subsection of the country instead of trying to cover the entire distance from Zagreb to Dubrovnik. I had to forgo Istria and Plitvice and all of northern Croatia altogether because I decided to concentrate just on the southern Adriatic coastline - from Split to Dubrovnik, including some islands off both. That's the only advice/perspective I could give you...if it helps. I know that there will be a "next time" for me, so I don't worry too much about trying to span the entire country. Even between Spit and Dubrovnik the vacation was packed because I always want to do more than time allows. With any country (unless it's pretty compact), I try to focus on an area/region just to minimize travel costs and to see that area more thoroughly than otherwise. I think you are severely underestimating the time it takes to tour a place and then the time it takes to hop to yet another place. I would say give yourself a minimum of 2 full days in any one place (unless it's clearly a day trip, such as Krka park or Plitvice, although some folks really relish the outdoors and want to hike, so maybe one day may not be enough for them)
