Croatia Honeymoon

My fiance and I will be taking our honeymoon the last two and a half weeks of August (we know this is the busiest time to go anywhere in Europe, but it is our only chance to go until Spring, 2013!!) We are flying into and out of Geneva and plan to see Annecy (France), northern Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. In Croatia we will definitely be going to Plitvice park and to a small town (Vaska) about 2-1/2 hrs east of Zagreb where my grandmother's old house still stands. Besides those two things - we want to spend the majority of our time on the coast in a romantic setting. Does anyone have suggestions for small coastal towns and good beaches that might not be totally filled with travelers or would be good as a home base to do day trips out of?

Hi Tina, my fiance are also planning a Croatia/Slovenia honeymoon, but in April 2012! We fell in love with Plitvice after seeing it on RS! Please pass along any tips you get, and good luck!

Tina,
It will depend on how many nights you'll have on the coast. It sounds like you will only have a few nights. Is this true? If so perhaps you should consider going somewhere between the island of Rab and Crkvenica (mainland). This is closest to Zagreb and Vaska. This is a nice area with lots of mountains and also great swimming. All the other places I'd love to recommend would require more time. Let me know if I'm wrong about the time factor.

Kris,
If you are interested, my wife and I can offer some advise on where to go while in Croatia. Just let us know how much time you have. We have travelled the whole coast and most of inland Croatia a few times.

Thanks for your responses so far! We will be in Croatia a total of about a week. We wanted to spend at least 3 full days on the coast and 1 at Plitvice.

Tina,
Unless you are willing to drive many hours I would stick to the recommendations we offered. You will get a sense of what the Croatian coast offers without having to drive too far. James, It sounds like you will have an enjoyable 4 nights. Both towns are old and historic and are easy to navigate. Try and get to the sea organ in Zadar. Since you are on the coast, make sure to enjoy a fresh seafood platter.

Tina, My friends and I were in Croatia last year from the very end of August through the first week of September (Split, Hvar, Dubrovnik). We really enjoyed the time we spent on the island of Hvar. I'm sure there's some degree of difference pre/post Labor Day as far as tourism, but we didn't find it to be too crowded when we were there. Beautiful beach/pool, good day trips by boat (highly recommend the blue and green caves on Vis). Good luck!
