Hi-My boyfriend and I have been seeing a lot about travel to Dubrovnik and Split. Has anyone ever been and can you take a train to Dubrovnik from Germany or Austria. We would like to spend some time in Germany or Austria and then go on the Dubrovnik. Any input would help. Either private email or post on this site. Thanks- Kim
Split is great. There is regular rail service via Zagreb and Zagreb is well-connected from Germany and Austria. If you're not familiar with it, check bahn.de for continent-wide rail schedules; you'll find plenty of options.
From Austria/Germany to Croatia you will probably travel through Slovenia--a beautiful country worthy of a minimum of several days in my opinion. Once you get to Split by rail, ferry or bus, there is no rail option south to Dubrovnik, but the 4 hour bus ride is comfortable and reasonably priced.
Germanwings has very low-cost flights to Croatia. Plan it right and it's cheaper than a train and much faster than a bus. This page on Getting to Dubrovnik (http://www.croatiatraveller.com/southern_dalmatia/Dubrovnik/GettingtoDubrovnik.htm)is really helpful and up-to-date.
Hi: I have been to Croatia twice since 2005. There are no trains to Dub. The trains stops as far south as Split, from there you can take a bus or ferry to Dub.
Have fun.
