Hello - I am wondering if it was easy to hire a driver when our cruise ship arrives in the Crete port of Souda -do we have to go to Chania to do this - or if we should pre-book a driver to show us around Crete
Could not find any driver/car rentals listed for Chania or Souda. There always seem to be plenty of taxis. How long do you have in Chania - usually cruise ships stay a day at most - you will not see much of Crete in that time. Chania itself has an interesting Venetian harbour and old town; museums, shopping and restaurants. The city's origins go back to Minoan times and there are some recently excavated ruins in the streets surrounding the harbour. Well worth a day just exploring and enjoying the town.
Gayle, I was just on Crete in July and visited Chania. The locals know the ship schedule. There'll be plenty of taxis and cars waiting for hire when the ship pulls in. Your cruise ship could book you one ahead of time, but it'll be costly. If there's somewhere in particular you'd like to go, then prebooking is the way to go though. For a day, you should stay on the western side of the island, it's bigger than you think.
