Crete - need to rent a car to see sights ? or, take local tours/buses

Hello, We will be in Crete for about 3+ days. Staying in Iraklio/Heraklio. Would like to see some of the ruins/sights outside of Iraklio - should we rent a car, or are there local tour companies (none listed in Rick's Greece book) that are a better option to see the sights on Crete ? Thank you, Karen

A car will give you the best flexibility and most efficient use of your time. A tour is convenient and will possibly come with a knowledgeable guide, not just a driver or someone going through the motions. You can decide once you're there. You'll easily find tour/travel companies in Heraklion. In case you decide on a car be sure to go to your local AAA office to pick up an International Driving Permit, no test or membership required.

We took a city bus out to Ancient Knossos (we asked where to catch the bus at our hotel in Heraklio)and spent an entire morning there and then came back to town and then toured the big archeological museum. One of our favorite places was the city market. You can buy everything from fresh produce and a whole rabbit to spices and leather goods. It was an experience!! We saw the El Greco statue and sat outside at a cafe and had freddo (iced coffee). We also had a delicious Cretan dinner which is different from Greek food. You will love Crete!!! They have different shopping than the islands or Athens, more handmade type things. We want to go back to Crete. We walked or did the city bus everywhere we went except when we went to the airport we took a taxi. If you were going out of Heraklio you would need a car but staying in town walking and the city transports can take you anywhere.

Sarah, point of information please. You said you toured the archaeological museum in Heraklion. Is the whole thing open again or were you only allowed to see part of it as has been the case for the last 6 years? Thanks
