I've heard folks should rent from a local car rental agency instead of the big names like Hertz the best rates and service. Does anyone have any suggested companies for Heraklion area they have used? I've looked at Anna Car, Mega Car Rental, and Best Car Rental but not sure how good they really are.

We spent a week in Crete in 2007 and used a car from Kosmos.
It was arranged for us by Fantasy Travel. We picked up the car or rather we were picked up in Heraklion and dropped it off in Hania.
The car was great and the driving spectacular.

I have a similar question. I have a quote from InterHellas rental in Heraklion for a 5-day rental in July. The price was half of what Avis quoted. Does anyone have any experience with this company? I am primarily concerned with the reliability of the car, and of course, with someone actually showing up with the car as promised. Thanks.

I went with Anna Car Rental & they were great. The agent was waiting for me at the ferry dock with my car even though my ferry was 2 hrs late. Paperwork taken care of on the spot & easy drop off at the airport.
