We had the best time in Sicily with a woman who ran market tours followed by a cooking class and meal. We're looking to do something similar in Istanbul. Any recommendations or warnings?
Not a cooking class, but we thoroughly enjoyed our market/food tour with Salih from My Local Guide Istanbul. I can't recommend this one enough.
Three years when we were in Istanbul we took the Sarnic Hotel Turkish Cooking Class and had an incredible time! We spent several hours in the hotel kitchen learning how to cook amazing Turkish dishes - a multi course meal. We laughed and called it "A cooking not looking class" because everyone was actively engaged and participating. When the food was done, our group sat down to enjoy a wonderful meal. Mehmet, the hotel manager, and a local chef conducted the class and were both wonderful! We came home with some new Turkish recipes and lots of great memories. This winter I was in Istanbul and went on the Istanbul Eats Walking Tour - the Culinary Secrets of the Old City and WOW what a day! We met at the Spice Market in the morning and had the most amazing tour guide. For the next 6 hours we walked and ate and talked and had the time of our lives! We had 10 different eating stops in very local, lesser know areas around the Spice Market and neighboring neighborhood of Fatih. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this tour!! They offer a few different options and I'm sure they are all equally good.
