Constanza, Romania & the Danube Delta

We are arriving by cruise ship and will be in port 11 hours. What do you think we should see and do? Is the Danube Delta boat ride worth our time? Where can I get the schedule and prices? We were also considering renting a car and just motoring around and going into small towns. Is this a good idea and worth seeing? Overall, what do you recommend? Thanks.

Are you docking at Constanta? If you are you could easily spend eleven hours there. All the country around the city is flat farm land. The Danube delta is a trip that could take you two or three days. I believe you would have to go to Tulcea to do that. You could drive an hour north of Constanta to the village of Terraverde and see where my grandfather was born. The village has a tavern. We found an English speaking taxi driver who drove us to Terraverde so I'm sure you can find one too. The hotel desk did the finding for us. If I can help further let me know.

A trip into the Danube Delta would be interesting but you don't really have enough time to do it, especially using public transport ferrys (in general they run once per day: they leave from Tulcea in the afternoon, cross the Delta, spend the night in the small towns at the other end of the Delta and come back next morning). You could of course head to Tulcea and rent a boat - you can find locals with boats on the waterfront, like a sort of water taxi - to do a short trip into the Delta but it would still be too hurried. Renting a car to tour the region would be a better idea but not to see small towns, the main thing worth visiting are the several ancient or medieval sites in the area. For instance you could go see the ruins of the ancient Greek city Histria, located about one hour north of Constanta.
Then you could drive on to Enisala (another hour to the north) where there's a 13th-14th century Genoese fortress
