Communications from Turkey

I am traveling to Turkey in a few weeks. I would like to know the best way to communicate with family and friends in the USA while I am there.

Probably by Internet via Internet cafes. They are still quite plentiful in Turkey compared to the rest of Europe (where the Wifi spot is taking over). Also, very cheap--on average you should be able to find a place that will let you go online for about 1 lira an hour. Watch out for the undotted "I" on your keyboard--it'll make your messages look strange when received in the US. A lot of places have English language keyboards--just ask.

If you have an unlocked non-CDMA phone, you can get a Turkish SIM card from Turkcell. By the way, if you need to ask, the Turkish word for cell phone is "cep telefonu."

To expand on JER's comment about the undotted "i", on the Turkish-language keyboards, it's in the same location as our dotted "i". I forget the location of the dotted "i", but it is on a Turkish keyboard. You just have to hunt for it. Not only will your emails look a bit "off" with the undotted "i", any login ID or password with an "i" will not work if you use the undotted "i".

Hi,
This is GY from Turkey izmir city
wellcome in advance :)
beside internet cafes they are available everywhere and 1 hour fee is more or less 1 USD (in the hotels is may be increase up to 5-10 USD per hour)
there are alot of public phones are available to be used with a paid cards aprox. 4-5 USD max. with preload 50 units which is equal ~5min. talks with USA.
If the cost is not important I advise the same to you to buy a GSM sim card supported by Vadafone Telsim or Turkcell.
I could say that communication will be not a problem for you anyhow.
Regards
