Closest to sights in Prague

I am traveling with my parents (ages 82 and 83) to Prague during the first 2 weeks of October. My dad can't walk so well anymore. I am using Rick's guide to set up sleeping arrangements. I am assuming that being as close as possible to the Old Town area would be best.

I would like to have the trip be as economical as possible, but still be within close walking distance (or being close to public transportation).

I see that Rick lists hotels in 3 areas -in the Old Town area, away from the center, and even further out from the center. Is a hotel in the "away from center" area still manageable for someone who cannot walk a lot?

We were in Paris for 2 1/2 weeks last October - often times my dad would sit somewhere while myself, a friend and my mom walked all over.

I am also planning to stay a couple of nights in Cesky Krumlov. I'd like to stay at another town as well, but planning all the moves in a country where English might not be too familiar outside of Prague sounds as though it might be too much hassle.

Walking in Prague is basically a necessity, but the old, slippery cobblestones may be difficult for your father. I stayed at the Hotel Hastal and while we were very close, we still walked for miles each day.

One thing you might want to do, is to just pay for a hotel right at the Old Town Square. There is a lot close by that could be seen without a lot of walking. Also the horse drawn carriages and most of the driving tours all start in this area too

For parents with limited mobility, you might do best near the Old Town square, mainly because its relatively flat and compact. The New Town and the Castle are probably beyond your parents' walking abilities. Public transport in Prague will move you between the various sections of the city, but within each section, I'm afraid walking is the only way to get around.

Personally, I stayed at Pension Medvidku (sp?), recommended in Rick's book. Although it's close enough to the Old Town, the stairs are probably too rickety for an 80+ year old couple.

There is a very nice hotel on the main square in Cesky Krumlov that has elevators. I don't recall the name. There are many side streets ideal for short walks. There are benches in the courtyard of the castle...perfect for sitting and waiting on someone taking the tour.

In addition to what the other responders have posted...you can also take taxis here and there in Prague and probably in CK. Taxis are inexpensive in the Czech Republic.

My only concern would be hotel reservations with so few weeks left.

Enjoy your trip!

Thanks for the comments!

My mom can walk all over the place - I really pushed her to her limit in Paris!

My Dad is actually in great shape. He still participates in the Senior Olympics and has MANY (100?) ribbons. He does have a sports injury in his leg that cause walking on hard surfaces to be difficult.

We stayed at the Yellow Boot from Rick's book, and really loved the place. It was a few blocks uphill from a very convenient tram route, so it might work for you. It's between the castle and the "lesser town" area, and I loved it because it's a little less crowded and tourist-packed than the Old Town square area.

One area you might like is Kampa Island, which is (sort of) part of the lesser town. It's right on the river, and directly under the Charles Bridge. You're just over the bridge from old town, yet in a more park-like setting where you can walk to the river to sit on a park bench and watch the boats go by. There are lots of restaurants in this area too, and the trams are close.
