Cheap flights to Athens, Greece

I am going to be in a study abroad program in Athens, Greece for Winter quarter of this year (January to March of 2011) and I am wondering where to best sites to search for cheap airline flights are? Also, I would like to know when the best day to fly is?

Someone recently referred me to this one. It's one of the best I've found, with lots of options to narrow the search: http://matrix.itasoftware.com If you select "see calendar of lowest fares" you'll be able to determine on which day the fare is lowest during the month you select. You can indicate how many days you'll be there so you can see the best dates/fares for your return flight. Uncheck the airlines with the fares that are too expensive. Pay attention to flight duration times. They can be way too long!

Hi Caroline! TIMING: for best airfares look at Tuesday & Wednesday, NOT in Spring Summer because that's when the strike-prone Greeks strike, but in Winter, T-W best buys. Just googled Prosser, & looks like "the back of beyond".. I gather u will be looking at Seattle or Portland for best deals, then get yourself there somehow... if you try to link it up with a puddle-jumper from Prosser, you'll limit yourself a lot. Find the international deal, then figure out the Prosser round-trip. WEBSITE: some like Kayak, I like MOBISSIMUS, because you can sort diff ways, by $, by departure, by arrival,by # of stops. If u are willing to have a looong trip w. 2 connections, you'll get best rate, if u have the stamina. DO beware of connections somewhere like Iceland! or stopovers of 8 hours! WHEN to BUY: Don't rush! Most airlines aren't listing all their flights yet. There will be plenty of seats. RIght now, you can do Seattle-ATH via London for about $1,000 and I bet if you wait until Oct, even Nov, prices will drop like a stone. Pick a flight u like & check it week after week.

For the time period you are travelling, watch out for travel around the holidays (Christmas and New Years) as fares spike for certain days, and may be deeply discounted for others. Try a variety of days in search engines, maybe even travel on Christmas day. Typically, travelling on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday is cheaper by $50 or so. Start now by tracking fares and using the sites mentioned above, but maybe expect that the best prices will be about 12 weeks (early October) before departure. One issue you do have is that leaving from the west coast and travelling to Eastern Europe is more costly than New York to London. I would expect at least two layovers. Key is: get an idea of a good price, and when you see a great price, jump on it and don't look back.
