Chartering a sailboat with captain and crew

I've always dreamed of going to Greece and touring the islands by boat. I'm thinking 4 - 6 of us plus a captain and maybe a deck hand. Is it safe? How do I find a boat and captain? I want to experience Greece, the warm water, the beaches, the wonderful people and their country and not neccessarily all the tourist stuff. I'm thinking late June. Any tips would be a big help.

Based on other traveler's comments I suggest researching the boat and captain as much as you can.

Some people wait until they arrive in a port town to ask locals to recommend a boat. That is what I would do.

I would ask as many as I can before deciding. Any printed info you find on the web may not be accurate.

Reserving in advance is an advantage, but that may not be possible for you to do safely. It's called buying a pig in a poke.

You might want to check out GAP tours. They offer sailboat tours on boats that hold only 8 passengers plus crew. You could rent the whole thing.

years ago I used to received a publication called Morning star, but I am not sure if I remeber correctly.
You also can rent a car and drive around to places less touristy. It will be cheaper and easier to do it.
A few years ago I rented a car on Crete and drove around along the sea. It was a blast.

Rose; pick up a few copies of some US sailing/boating magazines (Cruising World, SAIL, etc.) at your local book store. If they're advertising in magazines such as those, you can be reasonably assured they're reputable. There are charter companies (bareboat or with crew), many with their corporate offices in the USA, that have been doing it for decades and all over the world. For $20 bucks worth of magazines, will give you a feel for what's out there and what the cost might be.
