Chania, Crete in late October

My first trip to Crete, and have 7 days. From your experience, what are the sightseeing and other "musts" for Chaina in particular (please feel free even to name restaurants and local dishes) and for Crete in general. Many Thanks from Peter

Peter Rethymnon, an hour along the coast by local bus, is worth a visit. Not been there for four years but we liked Taman to eat. It's in an interesting building in Zambeliou Street just back from the seafront. The Well of the Turk also used to be good. It's opposite Agia Irene church. Alan

If you are interested in WW2, visit the Souda Bay war cemetery. As a (stark) contrast also visit the German war cemetery. Rent a car and drive down to Paleohora on the south coast.

It really depends on what you are interested in for the time you are there. Crete is a pretty big island. Do yourself a favor and rent a car & a good road map. Anna car rental http://www.annacars.gr is a company I've rented from. Unfortunately it will be too cold for beach time. It's too bad RS doesn't have anything on Crete, but you can find some decent guidebooks out there & you can find some good ideas on TripAdvisor. Chania is a great town with a bunch of things to see like the Naval Museum, Archaeological Museum, Folklore Museum, Chania Cathedral, Etz Hayyim Jewish Synagogue, beautiful harbour, and plenty of narrow old streets filled with shops. I would give Chania itself 2 relaxed days, the rest of the time you can travel to the south coast, do a gorge hike if its not raining, Knossos (get there before 10), Arkadi Monastery, wine tasting, & so on. Definitely eat fresh grilled seafood while you are there. 7 Days will go by very fast...10 days is usually right to see a good part of that wonderful island.
