We will be traveling from prague to CK and then on to vienna at the end of June. We wanted to get a "taste" of the alps on the way. Any suggestionsof a town to stay a day or two on the way to vienna?
As another responder alluded to,, there are no Alps between Prague and Vienna. Look at a map. For a worthwhile town to stay at on the way = Cesky Krumlov ,,,it is VERY picturesque and has hills around it.
In June there will not be the dramatic snow peaks on the alps anyway. It would be better to go along the Danube, wine country, old Melk abby etc.
Which US guide book to Europe tells you there were Alps between the Czech Republic and Vienna? There are mountains or better hills in between. The Alps, however, only start in the Southern half of Austria (Vienna is in the Northern half). If you want to detour so you get to see the Alps then take the country road from Krumlov into Bavaria and drive down to Salzburg. On the German side just before Salzburg you can go to the Berchtesgarden area which is in the middle of the Alps. And/Or from Salzburg day-trip to the Lake district of Hallstadt. And here is another time-consuming but most scenic highlight. From Salzburg take the freeway down to Zell am See (visit the town) then take the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße, Austria's highest Alpine road) down towards Lienz (not to confuse with Linz). From there drive via Villach, Klagenfurth (another beautiful lake district) and Graz (a great city well worthwhile) back up to Vienna. That way you'll get most of the Alps!
You know, I was asking this question for information, not some condescending "there are no alps....look at a map". I never thought there were alps directly between the two cities. I was asking for a side trip. Anyway we went last June and had a blast but skipped the alps to spend more time in Vienna.
