Cesky Krumlov; day trip

Can you make Cesky Krumlov a day trip from Prague? If so, what is the best method to get there.

You can make it but it is three hours one way. The fastest is Student Agency yellow bus. You can also go by train. You have to change trains in Ceske Budejovice. I would recommend to stay overnight.

The Student Agency bus is the way to go. You can book online. They provide movies and free wifi on the bus. It's faster and cheaper than the train, and drops you near the center of town, not a 20-minute walk away, like the train. It can be done as a day trip, but I wouldn't. When it comes to smaller places like this, they come in two categories 1) big bang & 2) sweet and/or picturesque. At a big bang sight, you get the "bang" in a short time - maybe it's just one site, like a cathedral or a castle, but the bang can be adequately experienced in a few hours. At a sweet/picturesque sight, there is no one spot to focus on. The attraction is the town as a whole and takes more time. In particular, it takes seeing the town in all three phases of the day - morning, mid-day, and evening - to get a real sense of the place. Cesky Krumlov is like that. Athough it may be a bit awkward, it is logistically possible to do it as a link in a longer itinerary, rather than a day trip from Prague. The hotels in CK run shuttles to the cities nearby and to Linz, Austria - the nearest larger city with good fast train service.

We did it as a day trip last summer, using Student Agency (we didn't have the option of making an overnight). We were really happy with the day. We took the earliest bus in, and the latest bus out and had a really full day full of seeing the sights, two great meals, and just wandering all around the town. If you can, I think an overnight would be fun, but we were more than happy with our day trip! Enjoy :)

We too did Student Agency bus last summer, but planned as two nights. We took midday bus in and went to the Opera at the Revolving Theater in the Castle Gardens, and spent the next day wandering around with a nice relaxing evening, with an early bus back to Prague to make a flight. You have to have at least one overnight in order to enjoy the town and views at night, along with breakfast on the river if you've chosen a place that backs out onto the river.
The bus ride is amazing, the movie is not needed as the scenery is wonderful. And there are actually two bus stops in town, both about the same short walk to the town square. But the walk from the first, up to and passing through the old main gate, is not to be missed. We actually stopped dead there to fish the camera out of my backpack.

Think about spending the night there, it is beautiful at night and you would want more time during the day than all that bus riding will allow you to do in a day.

Premiant Tours premiant.cz do a good day trip at a reasonable price. Haven't been yet but have booked myself. It was recommended to me.
