Has anyone purchased or rented a cell phone for use in Croatia? What was the cost? Know I can buy a phone card to use for my calls, but a cell would be more convenient if not too expensive.

Never done that, but you can buy a cheap one here off ebay, like unlocked and tri or quad band type.
Try Telestial.com. I bought a tri-band cell phone and one of their Passport SIM cards. I use it whenever I go to Europe.
